Disaster EMT Upgrade

The Disaster EMT Upgrade (DEMT) is based on the classic Wilderness EMT Upgrade. We have added disaster specific topics including blast injuries, crush injuries, hazardous materials, technical rescue overview, and public health considerations during a disaster. This course is designed for providers that may be the first on scene of a natural or man made incident. Since extra resources may not always be readily available, providers should be ready to work “outside the box” for as long as necessary. This course covers just such a setting.

EMT Basic

This course will prepare the student to take the National Registry exam to become an Emergency Medical Technician. It is 120 hours in duration and may be set up in many different formats that range from 5 months to one month. Prior to the start of class, students must submit a FBI background check, high school diploma, and MVR.

EMT Basic Refresher

This 24 hour course is designed to refresh the EMT on standard principles of medicine. The class will be a mix of both lecture and hands on skills.

EMT Paramedic Refresher

Designed to provide the mandatory hours for paramedics necessary to recertify. This course covers the core and flexible components required by the National Registry of EMT’s. Students should expect to spend mornings in the classroom and afternoons in practical skills sessions.

Wilderness First Responder

Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the ideal medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. This course is offered in several formats, including the 5-day format, which requires several hours of pre-course work to be completed.

Open Recertification

The Open Recertification course is open to graduates of ALL wilderness medical training courses of 64 hours or longer with a current Wilderness First Responder certification. Successful graduates of this course will receive Wilderness Medical Associates’ Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR certifications. WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT with this course.

Wilderness Advanced Life Support

The Wilderness Advanced Life Support (WALS) is Wilderness Medical Associates’ most advanced level course. Our 4.5 day (36 hr) course is open to certified or licensed advanced level medical practitioners involved in rescue, mass casualty, and remote outdoor environments or urban areas in crisis. This constantly-evolving course is highlighted by discussions of new and controversial ideas and the appropriate application of technologies; and we test some of these in the field. The learning environment is challenging, stimulating and fun. Category 1 CME credits for physicians and physician assistants, CEUs for paramedics and Contact Hours for nurses are available. This activity is also eligible for credits toward Fellowship in the Wilderness Medical Society’s Academy of Wilderness Medicine.
