Course Descriptions
Wilderness First Aid
This 2-day (16 hour) course is an introduction to wilderness medicine. Topics include:
patient assessment system; body systems; environmental injuries and conditions;
anaphylaxis; lifting, moving and extrication; patient carries; backcountry medicine; and CPR.
This is a good course for outdoor recreationalists.
Wilderness Advanced First Aid
This four-day (36-hour) course is a more in-depth course than the WFA, covers more
topics, and includes simulations. This is a good choice for assistant trip leaders or guides
who will be assisting Wilderness First Responder or WEMT-trained staff. It is recommended
for anyone on a two to four day trip where they may have to care for a patient for hours.
WAFA-to-WFR Bridge
This four-day (36-hour) course will give the WAFA certified provided an upgrade to the
Wilderness First Responder level. Participants must have taken the WAFA course no more
than two years prior to taking the Bridge course. This course may also be used to recertify
a WFR certification.
Wilderness First Responder
Wilderness First Responder has become the gold-standard in medical training for outdoor
educators, guides, and other backcountry professionals. The curriculum is comprehensive
but practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and
manage medical problems in remote and extreme environments. Wilderness First
Responder is the best basic medical training for people who like to work or play off the
beaten path. The curriculum makes liberal use of practical hands-on sessions as well as
classroom lecture and discussion. You should expect realistic scenarios using stage blood
and simulated wounds to properly prepare you for backcountry emergencies. Sessions may
be video-taped to enhance learning. Wilderness First Responder is presented in 72 hours
over eight days.
Wilderness EMT Upgrade
This 5-day (45 hour) course will upgrade your state EMT certification to Wilderness EMT.
Current EMT-B certification is a prerequisite. This course helps EMS personnel understand
remote and disaster medicine with improvised equipment in remote environments as well as
learn the wilderness protocols. You will learn WMA’s proven body-systems approach to
medicine and will better understand illness and injury over long periods of time. Forty five
hours of CEHs are available from Maine EMS and 45 Advanced Level CEUs from CECBEMS.
Wilderness Advanced Life Support
This is Wilderness Medical Associates'® most advanced level course. Our 4.5-day (36 hr)
course is open to practitioners currently certified or licensed at the EMT-I (with ALS
training), Paramedic, RN, NP, PA, MD or DO levels Other medical practitioners will be
considered on a case-by-case basis. Now in its seventh year with nearly 400 certified
graduates, this constantly-evolving course is highlighted by discussions of new and
controversial ideas and the practical application of appropriate technologies in the many
settings that make up wilderness and rescue situations. And we test some of these in the
field. The learning environment is challenging, stimulating and fun. Category 1 CME credits
for physicians and physician assistants, CEU'S for paramedics and Contact Hours for
nurses are available. This activity is also eligible for credits toward Fellowship in the
Wilderness Medical Society's Academy of Wilderness Medicine.
Open Recertification
This three-day (24 hour) course is a recertification course open to graduates of ALL
wilderness medical training courses of 64 hours or longer with a current certification. Upon
successful completion of this course you will receive Wilderness Medical Associates WFR,
Anaphylaxis and BLS-level CPR certifications. WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B
or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT.
Completion of pre-course study packet is required for all participants.

* knots, hitches, and anchor systems
* belay operations

Fundamentals of Search and Rescue
This course is designed for new personnel as well as for the experienced SAR personnel. A
night search will be conducted with emphasis on the skills and techniques learned during
the course. This course satisfies the basic search and rescue training requirement for local
search and rescue coordinators. This course is designed to provide a minimum level of
standardization in training. One should leave this course with a limited skill level of the
fundamentals for search and rescue. The completion of the course in no way guarantees
expertise to any degree. The course, upon completion, is not intended to be a license to
perform. The FUNSAR course makes every effort to use both classroom lecture and field
experience as a means to convey information. The course consists of three basic topics;
Search, Rescue and Survival/Support skills. The search exercise refers to the application
of some of the skills learned in the course.
National Mountain Bike Patrol
This one day course covers topics required by the International Mountain Bike Association.
The course will also cover topics such as bike maintenance and customer service.
